China complains to WTO about Canada’s 100% tariff on Chinese electric cars

According to a statement from China’s Ministry of Commerce, the authorities have applied to the World Trade Organization (WTO). What exactly pushed China to complain about Canada? Tariffs on electric cars! Beijing hopes that the WTO will determine who is right and who is wrong.

Chinese officials insist that Canada is taking repressive measures against China unilaterally. In this context, the Chinese authorities had to file a complaint with the WTO. The reason is Canada’s decision to impose a 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles. Beijing views such measures as a "violation of the principles of market economy and competition, undermining and distorting global supply chains."

Besides, China’s government calls on Canada to show mutual respect and adhere to WTO rules. At the same time, China promises to take appropriate measures to protect the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises.

Earlier, China launched an investigation into the import of Canadian canola (local varieties of rapeseed and mustard) and certain chemical products. This measure was retaliation to Canada's tariffs imposed on Chinese electric vehicles.

Interestingly, China’s authorities have repeatedly complained to the WTO about their trading partners. Previously, Beijing filed complaints against the United States and the European Union, accusing them of trade protectionism.
